Research
As
published in the British Journal of Dermatology, phototherapy with blue (415 nm)
and red (660 nm) light was studied in the treatment of mild to moderate acne
vulgaris. After 12 weeks of 15 minute daily active treatments with a portable
light source, a mean improvement of 76% in inflammatory lesions was observed.
Investigators and patients favored the blue-red light therapy, with more
patients achieving marked improvement or clearance than in any of the other
treatment groups. The researchers concluded that blue light and red light
"act synergistically in improving acne by combining antibacterial and
anti-inflammatory action, rendering phototherapy with blue-red light an
effective and safe treatment for acne vulgaris."

Red Light Aids Healing
Research reported in the British Journal of Dermatology (July 2000) found that regular sessions under blue and red light has been shown to "radically" help
clear acne in moderate and less severe cases.
"The consultant dermatologist Tony Chu
sent 120 patients home with specially designed red and blue lamps to be used
for 15 minutes each day. The results, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, show a 76% drop in visible
spots over 12 weeks." Taken from a report by Simon Bowers.
The blue light attacks the bacteria
that causes the acne, and the red light has an anti-inflammatory and healing
effect on the skin. In fact, research done by David Olszewski, co- author of
the book “Light Years Ahead ” has shown that skin heals almost
200% faster when exposed to red light.

Blue Light Kills Acne Bacteria
"Light gets at the core of what causes acne eruptions: P.
acnes, the bacterial responsible for causing acne inflammation, pumps out tiny
molecules called porphyrins. When those porphyrin are exposed to certain
wavelengths of light, they produce free radicals that kill the bacteria.
Without P. acnes around to cause inflammation, acne clears up."
"A low intensity blue light source (405 nm to 420 nm)
has been studied for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne. In
the study, two 15-minute exposures a week for a period of four weeks produced a
60 percent reduction in acne in 80 percent of patients. Reported remissions
from acne lasted as long as three to eight months."

FDA Approves Light Therapy for Acne
The FDA approved blue light therapy for acne in
August 2002. The first approved system of treatment, ClearLight, is
available through dermatologists. Patients are exposed to a blue light source
for 15 minutes twice per week for 4 weeks. Each treatment costs between $50 and
$150 per session, making a full course of treatment an average of $800. Light
therapy for acne is considered "cosmetic" and is therefore not covered by
insurance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
How does the Happy Skin Lamp Work?
Research
shows that the bacteria in the skin that causes acne, "propionibacterium
acnes" contains porphyrins, which can be excited by blue (415 nm) light,
leading to the killing of the bacteria. Studies show that red (660 nm)
light may have an anti-inflammatory effect on inflamed skin pores.
Based on European studies, the HappySkin Acne Light uses two isolated light
waves, a blue light that has been found to trigger a natural process that kills
the propionibacterium which settles in the follicles in the skin and causes
acne, and a red light that appears to positively affect the inflammatory
process.
What
is Acne and What Causes It?
Acne is a
disease of the sebaceous hair follicle. The hair follicles, or pores, in your
skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands). These glands make sebum,
which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin. Under normal
conditions, sebum travels up the hair follicle and out to the skin's surface.
However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle, clogging the follicle.
The bacterium that seems to cause acne is called Propionibacterium acnes (P.
acnes) and is present in everybody's skin, usually lodged in the hair follicle.
The clogged follicle becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. When the sebaceous
gland gets clogged, and sebum builds up inside the follicle, P. acnes multiplies
rapidly and can result in acne
How Far Away From the HappySkin Should I Sit?
Based on
research, sitting approximately 6 inches from the HappySkin for approximately
15 minutes each day is recommended.
How Long and Often Do I Use the HappySkin?
Each person's sensitivity to light is different. Do not expect your acne to clear up overnight. Based on
research, 15 minutes each day is recommended. The 15 minute session is per area
of skin exposed. If you have more than one acne area, it is okay to expose each
area for 15 minutes per day. A difference in your skin should be visible within
8-12 weeks of consecutive daily use. It is not possible to guarantee success in
every case.
Some
people use it for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night.
Can it Only be Used on the Face?
HappySkin can be
used on any part of the body, except genitalia, provided the area can be
positioned approximately 6 inches from the HappySkin.
Will I Get a Sunburn or Skin Cancer?
The wavelengths of light used in the HappySkin are outside the light spectrum that cause damage to the skin.
therefore, there is no risk of sunburn, or skin cancer.
Why Should I Wear the Goggles?
The light from the
HappySkin is very bright. For your comfort, wear the eye protector goggles that
are supplied with the unit when using the HappySkin.
