Permanent Makeup/Cosmetic Tattooing

What is Cosmetic Tattooing?

Cosmetic Tattooing is the pigmenting of skin by the process of tattooing for the purpose of (semi) permanent makeup, or the pigmenting of skin to camouflage loss of skin color.

Cosmetic Tattooing is also known as Color Implants, Intra-dermal pigmentation or Micro-pigmentation. No matter what the process is called, it is still classified as Tattooing.

What type of ink is used?

There are NO inks or dyes that will only stay in the skin for a limited time. Cosmetic Tattoo Artists use iron oxides (tattoo ink). The same as a body artist. Therefore, the pigment is permanent, although natural fading will occur over the years.

Potential clients should be wary of "specialists" who say that its a special vegetable dye that only lasts for a few years.

Does it hurt?

It depends on which part of the body. It is generally described as a sharp scratchy sensation. Annoying, but not unbearable. Most professional cosmetic tattoo artists are located in a Doctor's office, and will use some type of numbing agent.

How long does it take to heal?

Approximately 4-6 days.
During the healing period, a light scab will form. This will flake off over the healing period. A certain amount of color loss is experienced after healing. A retouch of color after two weeks will correct any color loss. (This is included in the price)

How long does it last?

Anywhere from 3 - 7 years before there is any noticeable loss of color. The darker or heavier the color used, the longer it will last. color will fade due to several reasons: Skin type, exfoliation, and more importantly, the depth that the ink has been implanted into the dermis. When receiving this treatment, consideration should be given to the fact that this IS a tattoo.

Is the treatment safe?

The tattooing effect is extremely good for the skin. It stimulates new collagen and elastin growth deep in the skin. New needles are used for every client and for every treatment. Health department regulations regarding this treatment are strictly adhered to.

Where can I get Cosmetic Tattooing

Look for a Cosmetic Tattoo Specialist at Dermatologist's offices and Cosmetic Surgeon's offices. Some Cosmetic Tattoo Specialist are located at specialty spas and salons.

When choosing a Cosmetic Tattoo Specialist, be sure to look at a porfolio of his/her work. Some specialize in a natural look, and some seem to want to do a more dramatic look.

Is is important to discuss color selection and demonstrate how you apply your own makeup before getting tattooed. Remember, this is permanent, and it is your face!

Start with a more natural look and add to it on your touch-up visit if neccessary.

Darker colors tend to resist fading over time, so take this into account when choosing your colors.

Permanent makeup can be applied to fill in or replace eyebrows, make lip liner or full lip color, eyeliner on top and bottom lids, shadowing on top eyelids, for medical reconstruction of nipples, and to camoflage birth marks.

This procedure is great for anyone, but especially helpful for those who would like to save time applying makeup in the morning, athletic individuals, those with eyesight problems, those with unsteady hands, and other who have difficulties applying makeup, or for those who just love makeup!

Of course, you can apply regular makeup over the tattooed makeup to change colors or enhance the look.

    About Sunscreen

Sure we all know to use a sunscreen to protect our skin form the harmful rays of the sun. But it can be confusing when looking for the right product and the right SPF factor. So, here is a breakdown of some ingredients and what they will do:

SPF# The number refers to the amount of time before your skin will burn. Example:

With SPF#8, you can be in the sun up to eight times longer than it would normally take you to burn. So if you would burn in 15 minutes with no sunscreen, it can take up to 2 hours (which is 8x 15 minutes) to burn.

Tyrosine: Speeds up your ability to tan.

Paba, Benzophene-3, Octyl methoxycinnamate: These are all popular and effective chemical sunscreens. Sunscreens form a protective barrier that change the harmful rays and deflect them off the surface. Many individuals are sensitive to these chemicals. Also, skin undergoing exfoliation treatments may become sensitive to these chemicals. It is best to use a "physical" sunblock ingredient such as Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide to avoid sensitivities.

Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide: These are physical sun blocks, the block out the sun's harmful rays.

Lotion: Better for oily skin and for use on the face as it is a lighter formulation and less likely to cause a breakout.

Cream: Great for the body as it is lubricating, though a lotion works fine also.

    Self Tanners

Basic Steps to apply them smoothly and evenly

1: Exfoliate your skin by using a loopha sponge or body scrub. Taking off dry, dead skin cells will give you a smooth surface to start with.

2: Follow with a body lotion. You can apply as much as you like, but wait about 5 minutes before the next step ( applying the tanner) this gives the skin time to absorb the lotion, which will help the skin become more balanced in the way it will absorb the self tanner.

3: Apply your self tanner. Use quick, even strokes, with a bit more care than you would applying a body lotion. Now there are self tanners that are tinted, to somewhat help you see if you have missed any spots.

    Warm Weather Tips:

1: Many people develop a rash from scented laundry detergent, and scented deodorant. It becomes more noticeable in warm weather, as one perspires.

2: Throw out last years sunscreen, after 6 months it can become less active and bacteria can grow.

3: Be aware that allergy and sinus medicines can dry out your skin, drink plenty of water and use moisturizer and body loiton.

4: Keep your makeup brushes and applicators clean by washing them in mild soapy water often. It may be time to switch to a lighter, water-based foundation. Oily skin can use a wet/dry powder foundation. Powder helps to absorb excess oil and may stay on better through the day for oily skin.

Using an Oil-Absorbing Gel will also help keep the face looking fresh.
