This product contains retinyl palmitate in squalane. Since pure vitamin A (retinol) is unstable in cosmetic preparations, the retinyl palmitate form is widely used in cosmetics and in vitamin supplements as vitamin A.

The squalane serves as a penetrating agent to carry the retinyl palmitate into the skin through the sebaceous glands in the hair follicles.

Many of our customers have said that our products that contained retinyl palmitate are very effective on relieving dry skin. This is especially noticeable in persons over age 40.

Retinyl palmitate has been found to increase skin elasticity, smooth rough skin, and reduce the peroxidation of skin lipids. (Boehnlein et al, Pharm Res 1994, vol. 11, pages 1155-9)

In another study, retinyl palmitate significantly increased skin moisturization while decreasing skin wrinkling. (Ji & Seo, Cosmet Toil 1999, vol. 114, pages 61-8)

Other reports say that retinyl palmitate improves skin elasticity and texture. Other retinol derivatives such as retinyl proprionate have similar actions.

Vitamin A/Retinol has an anti-wrinkle action mainly by reducing collagen and elastin degradation. A protein complex called AP-1 produces the enzymes that break apart and degrade collagen and elastin, the major structural proteins in skin. A balance between biosynthesis and breakdown is essential for healthy skin, however, as we age the balance shifts toward excessive breakdown that may produce harmful biochemical changes.

Vitamin A also restores normal skin repair during episodes of immune system depression.

In general, retinyl palmitate works very well for people over the age of 45, and for many people over the age of 25. But this retinol can cause increased acne in persons between the ages of 18 and 25. Paradoxically, retinol creams may also stop severe chronic cystic acne in some people between 25 and 40.

When using a retinyl palmitate product, it is best to start with light applications to your skin, and then gradually increase the amount.

Confusion over Retinol and Retinoic acid:

The actions of retinol (retinyl palmitate, vitamin A) are different, and often confused with those of retinoic acid (used in Retin-A and Renova). Even though the molecules are very similar and can be easily converted to the other molecule, their biochemical actions are often opposite. A biochemical analogy is that one key (or molecule) opens a lock while a very similar molecule, like a defective key, jams the lock.

Retinyl palmitate, vitamin A, retinol:

Improves skin moisturization, Reduces protein breakdown,

Said to reduce wrinkles Low,

Can cause breakouts in acne prone skin area in younger people

Retinoic acid, Retin-A(R), Renova(R):

Reduces skin oil, Reduces wrinkles, Reduces acne

High, Irritation and Redness, (Lobster Face Syndrome),

Very drying to skin

Increases production of the scar forming growth factor - TGF beta 1.

Usage and Cautions: Start the products lightly then, if no negative reactions occur, increase the amount applied.

Keep the retinyl palmitate solution away from strong light.

Especially useful on dry skin areas. Overusing could cause breakoutsm in oily skin areas.

Ingredients: Squalane, Retinyl Palmitate, mixed Tocopherols
